When is the right time to move on from your current job

Deicing to move on from your job can be a difficult decision whether you’ve been at your company for years or you’re relatively new, it’s never an easy decision to start looking for a new role. You’ll spend a lot of time weighing up the pros and cons of staying or moving elsewhere, to make things easier for you, we’ve got a few signs that usually suggest moving on could be the best decision for you.

You have no work-life balance

Your job is a huge part of your life, but it shouldn’t consume every waking moment. Most jobs will involve the occasional late night and early start – you might even have to check in on an important email over the weekend. However, if you’re finding yourself working outside of your normal working hours on a very regular basis it might be time to re-evaluate and find somewhere that gives you a little bit more free time.

You have no flexibility

Flexible working is a huge perk to any job some companies have been offering this for years – however since COVID flexible working opportunities are on the rise and if your current company doesn’t offer them, they’re falling behind with the times.

A huge number of companies will offer hybrid working, allowing you the flexibility to work from home and the office as well as some flexibility with your office hours.

You’re underpaid

This is probably one of the most common reasons for looking for a new job. You work hard and you should be rewarded for it. If you don’t think you’re being paid fairly it’s time to look elsewhere. Look for somewhere with a competitive package; a good salary, a bonus scheme, pension etc.

There is no room to progress

Being stuck at a company where you feel there is no room to grow is a huge reason to start looking elsewhere. Being in a job where there is a lack of progression opportunities can be de-motivating but it can also affect your future progression, hiring managers want to see people who have moved up the ladder.

If you’re seeing others getting promoted around you, or even worse, there is a distinct lack of progression within your whole team, it might be time to move on.

You feel like you don’t fit in with your company

Some people like to go to work, and then go home which is fine. But for some, work-life isn’t just about work – they want to fit in with the company’s values and culture and enjoy working with the people they work with.

Your companies culture and values can change how you feel on a day to day basis. Try looking for somewhere that offers company events, monthly team days out and target-based team incentives, which help you feel like part of the team.
