How to retain your employees
Running a successful and profitable business is important and several factors come into play when doing so. One of the biggest aspects when it comes to running a successful business is your employees, they are the core of any business and the work they do directly impacts your company.
Keeping your employers happy helps to retain them and in turn, keeps the business running smoothly and well. Take a look at some of the top things we think are important when it comes to retaining staff.
#1 Start by hiring the right people
If you feel like you’ve got quite a high turnover one reason that this could be happening is due to you not hiring the right people to start with. If you’re not getting the right people through the door you’ll notice staff leaving quickly. The wrong person in the wrong role will get bored and fed up pretty quickly and move on.
To try and avoid this, ensure you’re advertising the job properly – make sure the job role is defined as well as it can be and give as much information on the role as possible, as well as asking candidates the right questions when they get to the interview room.
#2 Always support and check in with them
Support your team from the start, right from creating a good onboarding process. When you have a new starter make sure you welcome them to the team and give them all the support they need for starting in their new role – don’t simply leave them to sit at a desk and get to it.
Continue to support your team throughout, this can be done simply by having a weekly catch up either as a team or one to one to see how everyone is getting on and if they have any issues or concerns they might like to bring up. This way you’ll know if there is an issue and then it’s on you to make sure you support in whatever way you can.
#3 Respect your staff
Of course in any business, there is a hierarchy and it’s important to set boundaries and for staff to know who reports to who, however, just because you’re above someone in a hierarchy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respect them.
As a manager you should make it a priority to show outward respect for employees regularly – this will help build a strong and enduring workplace culture as well as positive experiences and memories for your staff.
#4 Pay them well
We all know that money talks, and one of the most enticing things with any job is the package you offer them when they start. Make sure at the very least you’re paying your staff the going market rate, but if your budget allows it – stretch a little further to secure the competition.
Pay your staff as much as you can afford to, but also look at commission and bonus based upon performance – this won’t go unnoticed and it will help keep staff happy. You can also look at options such as revenue-sharing.
#5 Reward your staff
Rewarding your staff for their hard work is very important, and this doesn’t always have to be done with a monetary value. Rewarding staff in different forms is important – consider team building activities, company parties, lunches with the boss etc. Some of these can be based upon performance as well as having set activates in the calendar at the start of the year.
These types of rewards are great to show your staff you’re happy with how they’re working but it also helps to bring the team closer together.
#6 Help them grow
Help your staff grow by providing plenty of training opportunities. Your staff will feel valued if they can see you’re investing in them and helping them grow and Adapt to your company. It’s good to lay out how you intended training plans to look when they start with you. This could be a course once a year for example.
