How to Effectively Attract and Retain Employees to Your Business

A common default when looking to attract, and retain employees, is to think salary. People go to work for money. However, whilst base salary is always a factor, the tech industry can offer much more, making base compensation just one variable within attracting candidates.

Through this article, we will look at how we can refine interview processes to see a successful conversion of offers to hires, pitfalls in job advertising, and how we can retain those employees long term.

Interview Process

To get to the interview process the candidate first needs to apply for the job, whilst this sounds basic, there is an art to the balance of outlining the job expectation, and how the position will benefit the candidate. Job posting usually falls short on the latter. It is important to effectively outline the position, and in an industry where candidates are passionate about the tech stack they will be using, the work itself can be a selling point to attract talent. It is also beneficial to list company benefits, some words about the company culture, and even a direction of growth for where this position can lead if successful.

During the interview process, in a candidate-driven market, it is important to remember that you are likely not the only company this candidate is speaking with; therefore, the candidate is interviewing you, just as much as you are interviewing them; what does this position offer, outside of the initial salary? Question your interview process across 3 variables:

  • Have we been thorough in our interview to accurately assess the capability of the candidate?
  • Have we outlined the benefits of why they should work at our company and how this position will benefit them?
  • Are we moving fast enough to make an offer ahead of competitors?

If you can balance those three variables, then you will see greater success at securing candidates through interview processes.

Retaining Your Employees

Once you’ve secured your talent it’s time to keep them happy and retain them. From years of speaking with tech employees at various job positions and seniorities, I can confidently say that a large percentage of your staff are getting emails about competitive positions. Acting consciously about retaining your staff is necessary when there is an abundance of high paying, attractive opportunities.

Start by reviewing why employees may have left in the past. We can discount employees that had an arbitrary disagreement with a colleague or manager, in my experience of speaking with candidates looking to leave positions, this is rarely the case. Growth potential is most commonly the cause of candidates being willing to speak to a recruiter about a new position. Implementing tangible targets that are a transparent roadmap between you and the employee, gives them sight of progression and a reason to continue working as hard as possible. An effective roadmap for career progression created collaboratively with the employee’s career goals will go a long way in compounding reasons your employees want to continue to work at your company.
