Super-intelligence: The end of mankind?

A scary title, but by no means clickbait. In my last blog post, I touched upon machines such as self-driving cars needing the ability to think and react like humans, but could this technology one day supersede our intelligence?

Back in 2014, the late Stephen Hawking was honest about his opinion of our potential demise at the hands (or claws) of AI. The cosmologist said: “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.”

Other well-known intelligent minds have expressed similar statements too. Tesla’s Elon Musk believes that AI is a bigger threat than any nuclear warhead wielding nation, and without proper regulation in place, we may create something that is entirely uncontrollable or even worse, something that can recreate itself completely unsupervised.

Hollywood doesn’t exactly quash these fears either, with blockbuster movies such as The Matrix and The Terminator all depicting genuine hatred for the sentient machine’s creators, but what will happen?  How far into the future are we talking?

10 years ago, you may have thought that this is still centuries into the future, however, at the AI safety conference in Puerto Rico a few years ago, experts determined that we are likely to reach human-like AI before 2060.

This has been pretty gloomy thus far, so let’s take a look at the positive side of our future with artificial intelligence and some of the areas in which it can benefit society.

Super-intelligence in: Manufacturing

Industry 4.0 is happening now with automation and AI playing the biggest part. Machines can make decisions without the need for human intervention based on the vast amounts of data they’ll collect and learn from. The fifth industrial revolution might see us fully integrate human-like robots into our factories. Can you imagine a robot going for a cigarette break or getting distracted? The productivity will be through the roof!

Super-intelligence in: Healthcare

A key benefit of artificial intelligence is performing tasks to absolute precision. Clients of ours are already working on state-of-the-art neurosurgical robots. Imagine a world of humanoid robots performing everyday operations with more dexterity than the human hand, could you trust them?

Super-intelligence in: Hospitality

There are many examples of artificial intelligence in the hospitality industry, from chatbots for 24/7 support to customers to a fully robot staffed hotel in Nagasaki, Japan. Businesses are building the communities of the future, including smart restaurants, cafés, shops etc.

This is only a small portion of what to expect with the future of artificial intelligence, just imaging what super-intelligence can create for us.

Will implementing AI across multiple industries take some jobs away?

In a way, yes. However, I strongly believe that our future with artificial intelligence will create more jobs than not. The introduction of AI in any business will create a demand for new positions, human-AI hybrid teams will exist, and scaling businesses will become easier and more efficient. Businesses can now focus on more important tasks, generating more revenue which in turn creates more jobs.

The advancements in this space are so exciting, and we’re excited to work with businesses that are creating the future of artificial intelligence.
