How to job search while still employed
When you start searching for a new job while you’re still employed, you’re in the right position to show yourself in the best light. Potential employers may be more open to seeing how you can put your talents to use for them, as opposed to someone unemployed.
Review these tips to help you start searching for a new job while you’re still employed:
#1 Don’t neglect your current job
Make sure you stay aware that you’re not getting too swept up into your job search that you start to push back the work you’re being paid to do in your current role.
Continue to do your best to stay focused, arrive on time, and get your work done as you will want to remain on good terms with your current colleagues until you find your next role.
It is best not to be careless when discussing your decision to look for a new role with your current coworkers as this type of information would have its way of getting around the work environment.
#2 Avoid lying to your current employer
Even though you may not want to give away that you are looking for a new job to your current employer, refrain from lying to cover up your search. If you have a job interview lined up it is better to say that you need to “take the afternoon off”, than to make up an excuse like faking a doctor’s appointment.
However, if your boss does happen to find out about your job search, be honest and discuss your decision to seek employment within a new company.
#3 Keep your job search going in your own time
Whilst still at your current role don’t job search on company time, don’t use their phones or computers as you want it to stay private and not visible. Finding alternative hours to look for a new job and while you’re still employed it would be beneficial to arrange interviews and meetings before work, on your lunch break or after work hours.
#4 Don’t put down your coworkers or current boss’ as referees
If the potential employers make a call to your current employer before they have made you an offer, there is a risk of surprising them before anything is finalized so it is important to be careful when you put down names as references. Contact previous coworkers or supervisors to help.
In other words, searching for a job while employed requires you to tread lightly, be patient and stay discreet to avoid any disappointment.
