Robotics 2022: A Review
Needless to say, 2022 was certainly a tumultuous year for the tech industry.
Over 800 companies across the globe announced layoffs that affected all departments and close to 50,000 employees in the tech industry were left stranded to find new positions, with few options on the market. This doesn’t seem to be slowing down in 2023 either, with more layoffs announced from major companies like Alphabet, Amazon and Ford disbanded the much respected Argo AI.
The events that occurred at the start of the year in Eastern Europe were the main catalyst for the soar in commodity prices around the world, fuelling inflation even further and creating a down-turn in consumer spending.
This inevitably had a knock-on effect on major companies like the brands mentioned above, businesses became more frugal and retaining profits was the number 1 priority. 2021 saw a huge surge in recruitment across all industries as businesses were keen to get back on track after the pandemic but this undoubtedly sealed the fate of thousands of employees.
From my perspective, I noticed a polar shift in job preference and security. The large businesses that were once the safest option, have now become relatively unstable. Employees could be in a job one minute and wake up to find they’ve been locked out of their systems the next.
The attention has turned to start-ups. The layoffs have certainly made finding top talent easier, candidates are now discovering businesses that have more flexibility, the opportunity to have a much bigger impact and dare I say it, job security. Start-ups have much less pressure in retaining profits, their investors would rather focus on R&D and creating a fool-proof go-to-market strategy with timing being the key.
