How to write a resume in 2021

At Adapt Talent, we read hundreds of resumes each week, and we know a thing or two about what makes a good one, and what makes a bad one.

Writing a resume in a competitive, rapidly growing, market is a daunting task. Understanding the fundamentals of what an employer is looking for, what they are not looking for, and how to format your resume correctly, is beneficial in making a long-lasting first impression.

Always remember, the bottom-line purpose of a resume is to get you an interview, no employer ever rejected a candidate after 3 amazing interviews because their resume was too brief. Similarly, an employer could not interview someone if the resume didn’t relate to the job description or failed to list their skills.

How to build a strong resume?

So, what should you include to build a strong resume? Precise sections highlighting your skillset. Immediate buzzwords relevant to your industry will grab the hiring managers attention from the beginning, a ‘skills’ section is great for this and will build their interest to look into your employment history.

When listing your employment experience, remember that cultural assessment will be made through the interview process, so there is no need for anecdotes within an employment description. Always list an impressive project and fundamental technology used and keep your information quantitative, for example, rather than writing “a very large project for an enterprise client” a more quantitative approach would read “a $1.5 million project for an enterprise client”.

Aside from your job skills, a commonly requested asset from employers is job tenure. The more you can convince an employer that you are in for the long run with their company, the more they will invest in you. Do your market research on average job tenure’s for your industry, if you have job tenure’s that you can boast about, list them clearly. If there was a valid reason for changing position, give a brief statement justifying why the position came to an end.

To summarize, the key content you want to display are buzzwords of your skillset, quantitative details of your employment experience and job tenure.

What is the correct method to write a resume?

Though there is not a set format for an ideal resume, a good format will grab the reader’s attention and allow you to clearly demonstrate why you should be interviewed. As previously mentioned, directly after your name and contact details, having a skills section can convey your expertise effectively. Give thought to the order you list your skills, make the first skills the best mix between your best competency combined with the most specific, for example, a Shopify developer is likely to be competent with HTML, CSS, however so are many other developers, Liquid coding is specific to Shopify so would be more engaging to an employer.

When listing your employment history, list chronologically from your current position working back. Clearly list the company name, job title and responsibilities in a format that is easy to distinguish what the company, position and description are. Include the start and finish dates for the position clearly with each job, if you had multiple positions for one company, list the total company tenure next to the company name and time at each position next to the position title.

Why is a resume so important?

To conclude, always remember that the resume is to get you an interview, it is an initial representation of yourself that you can elaborate further on during the interview process and without that good resume you probably wouldn’t make it through to the interview process.
