eCommerce Landscape… from a recruiter’s perspective

We often hear how the market share for each ecommerce platform has changed, or how Shopify’s platform has exploded over the past two years. But what impact has this had on the recruitment landscape?

Our niche disciplines within eCommerce recruitment consist of the following platforms: Magento, Shopify, and SFCC.

Below, I will break down and compare each platform for 2021. From average salaries, what platforms have seen the biggest spike in salaries, what markets are growing, decreasing and much more.

Magento Careers

  • Average salaries for Magento jobs:
    • Junior: $100,000 per annum
    • Mid: $120,000 to $140,000 per annum
    • Snr/Lead – $130,000 to $165,000 per annum
    • Architect – $150,000 to $190,000 per annum
  • Percentage increases
    • Since 2020, the Magento salaries on average have increased between 5-10% depending on the level of the candidate. The percentage is towards 10% when moving towards Architect level.
  • Change in market share
    • Magento historically sits between enterprise builds and serving small to mid-size businesses. With the recent acquisition from Adobe, Magento has pushed towards enterprise customers. Mixed with the explosion of Shopify (small-midsize), and the dominance of SFCC (enterprise), we have noticed Magento losing customers in both directions.
  • Hiring timelines
    • Nothing changed here. We would suggest clients hiring within a week, or even quicker.
  • Future of Magento
    • Noticed candidates are switching to other platforms. It all depends on how Adobe presents the platform to prospective clients. Watch this space.
    • Prediction: Shopify and SFCC slowly take a larger market share unless Adobe changes its approach.

Shopify Careers

  • Average salaries for Shopify Jobs
    • Junior: $80,000 to $100,000 per annum
    • Mid: $110,000 to $140,000 per annum
    • Snr/Lead – $130,000 to $150,000 per annum
    • Architect – $150,000 to $165,000 per annum
  • Percentage increases
    • Since 2020, the Shopify salaries on average have increased between 5-10% depending on the level of the candidate. Senior candidates towards the higher spectrum of the percentage.
  • Change in market share
    • Shopify mixed in with COVID = huge growth compared to other competitors. Tackling the small-mid size area of the ecommerce market and empowering small businesses. Slowly but surely taking companies using Magento that don’t require heavy custom functionality. Still lacks the depth of custom features compared to other platforms.
  • Hiring timelines
    • Nothing changed here. Would suggest clients hiring within a week, or even quicker.
  • Future of Shopify
    • Extremely promising. Reflected in Shopify’s stock. More and more companies are moving to the platform. Predict a shortage in solid backend API Shopify Developers as the next few years progress.

Salesforce Cloud Commerce Careers

  • Average salaries for Salesforce Cloud Commerce Jobs
    • Junior: $100,000 to $120,000 per annum
    • Mid: $130,000 to $150,000 per annum
    • Snr/Lead – $150,000 to $200,000 per annum
    • Architect – $190,000 to $230,000 per annum
  • Percentage increases
    • Since 2020, the SFCC salaries on average have increased between 15-20% depending on the level of the candidate. SFCC market is officially nuts. Used by the top eCommerce stores worldwide that are financially sound, the salaries keep increasing.
  • Change in market share
    • SFCC has taken over the enterprise ecommerce world against competitors such as ATG, Oracle, Magento, and others.
  • Hiring timelines
    • Nothing changed here. Would suggest clients hiring within a week, or even quicker.
  • Future of SFCC
    • More companies to switch to SFCC which will increase salaries further. Huge demand for candidates, but not enough of them.

Although market shares have changed, each market is still more competitive than ever. Online shopping is at an all-time high, excelled by COVID.

To combat the difficulty of hiring good talent, I would suggest considering offshore options in a remote-first world. Alternatively, hiring candidates with solid fundamentals in programming and willing to learn SFCC would be another good option.
