How To Switch Off During The Holidays
Many of us work in stressful and demanding roles and often forget to take time off especially when we are passionate about what we do. Unfortunately, this can lead to burnout, so it is important that we learn to correctly switch off to recharge when we have time off and Christmas is a perfect time. Here is a little guide to help you sit back, relax, and enjoy this wonderful time of year with the people you love the most.
Separation
Due to Covid, a lot of us have been working from home and have permanent and dedicated WFH stations where we spend our days working. If this workstation is not already separate from the rest of your home, consider packing it up for the holidays or moving it elsewhere. This way you won’t feel compelled to log on and will help separate your living space from your work.
Digital Detox
Technology is such a large part of our lives especially for anyone who may be working remotely – it’s how we all stay connected! Consider turning off your notifications during the Christmas break. The constant pinging of emails, slack channels and teams conversations can lead you down a road of stress. Try to allocate a time slot daily to check through all your notifications at one time for that day and avoid checking any time something new pops up.
Sleep
During busy periods we often forget the importance of sleep and prioritise work and other things over it. This isn’t our fault, there are only 24 hours in the day and how else are we meant to get everything done? After all, if there is an important work deadline you need to meet then you tend to forget to catch them oh so important zzz’s. Ensure you allow yourself a good amount of sleep during your downtimes as this will help you feel refreshed and ready for when you are back in action.
Go Outside
Being out in nature can be one of the best ways to relax and unwind. I personally love nothing more than a long walk on a crisp, cold morning. Breathing in the fresh air fills you with energy and sets a great precedent for the day.
Socalise
Christmas is a time where many of us travel back to our families and hometowns. This is such a great time to step away from Outlook, put down that phone, and catch up with those you haven’t seen in a while. If you aren’t able to meet people in person due to covid, why not consider setting up a few video chats – you can have a glass of wine(or 10) and play some games or just a good old catch up.
Or dont!
Not everyone finds it relaxing to be out and about surrounded by people – and that’s OK too! Sometimes, nothing is better than finding a captivating series on Netflix and binging till your heart is content. My recommendations would be Ratched, Locke and Key and You. Or if you prefer reality TV binges (I am sometimes guilty) then Selling Sunset and Married at First Sight are fantastic.
Whatever you do this holiday season, don’t forget to look after yourself and take some time to unwind.
