How to quit your job professionally

Have you started to dislike your job and want to find something else? Have you found another job and need to know how to quit your current one? Once you have decided, you need to develop an exit strategy to ensure you leave respectfully.

Here are some tips on how to quit your job:

  • Firstly, have a look over your contract to confirm your notice period, this could be either 2 weeks or 4 weeks and you want to keep this in mind as even when you hand in your letter of resignation you will still have to work so you need to make sure you had in your letter with grace and respect. You also must make it a careful decision and take in all the factors like would you be financially stable? And are you doing it for the right reasons?
  • If you feel comfortable enough and think the issues or reasons you want to quit could be mended, speak to your boss, and see if there is anything that can be done but don’t give away any thought that you’re even considering quitting.
  • When it comes to resigning from your job, you might be tempted just to send a text or an email, but you must resist and write a formal letter of resignation and hand it into them in person or at least a phone call to then send your letter in. In your notice letter, you should include appreciation for the help and support from the company as this is a courtesy and you wouldn’t want to end your job on a bad note with the boss.
  • In your letter, state your reason for leaving or even speak to your boss beforehand to express your reasoning just so things are clear between everyone involved. Also, once you have handed your letter in, you should stay professional, continue to work hard and stay positive to ensure there are no issues with your move
  • Before you leave you would need to do a handover of some sort for the next person in your job role, make sure you tie up as many loose ends as you can and don’t become lazy with your work and then if you still need to do a handover, make it clear for the next person so it is a smooth transition.
  • Lastly, set up an exit interview to discuss things like unused sick/vacation days, your retirement/pension and what would happen to your health benefits and even any other company benefits that may help you down the road.
