Why it’s important to not get emotionally attached to recruitment

I think about this subject often, because quite frankly it is difficult not to get emotionally attached to our job, with the blood sweat and tears that are put in by many recruiters.

What people on the outside looking into the recruitment industry do not know, is that we care…A lot!

We are people pleasers, we want to meet our clients’ expectations, and the candidates all at the same time. Most of the time we do this but sometimes people will make decisions that do not go our way or sometimes do not give us decisions at all, and candidates can often ghost the recruiters.

I often see people get mind boggled when this happens, but ultimately, we must accept it and move on.

We never know what is going on in the candidate’s world, with other processes, personal life, current working situation. We also must accept that not everyone is good with providing bad news, and sometimes that can create stress and anxiety for individuals who would then find it easier to ghost recruiters, instead of telling us that our services are no longer required.

I think it’s important to not take these situations personally and to not get emotionally attached to a process. Personally, I work with complete empathy and will do my best for everyone involved in the recruitment process but when someone no longer requires my service, that’s okay!

My advice on how to receive, reflect and respond when this happens in future.

Ask yourself: –

  1. Did I fully qualify the candidate?
  2. Did I meet their expectations with the opportunity?
  3. How did my opportunity compare to other opportunities?
  4. Did I efficiently prepare my candidate prior to each interview?
  5. Did I provide detailed feedback after each interview stage?
  6. Did I retrieve detailed feedback after each interview stage?
  7. Did I question the progress and comparison to other processes?
  8. Did I communicate with the candidate over a call rather than messages/emails?
  9. Did I build a good enough rapport with the candidate?
  10. Did I fully trust the candidate at the beginning of the process?

If all the answers were ‘’YES’’ then great, you can simply accept you have done everything you can and move on.

If some answers were ‘’NO’’ then you know for next time to prepare and deliver better next time and maybe it could lower the chances of a candidate disappearing off of the face of the earth!
